Armed gang hits local bakery – officer shot

One security officer was shot, another assaulted, when several suspects targeted a Randfontein bakery in the first weekend of December.

One response officer was shot and another assaulted during a business robbery at a local bakery in the early hours of Sunday morning, 2 December, in Randfontein.

Randfontein Police said one of the employees of the bakery who was on duty during the incident has claimed that one of the suspects entered guards’ room armed with a firearm.

“Three more unknown males with firearms entered to help the suspect to open the main gate, then a white BMW drove into the premises and the security noticed six more unknown males arriving. There were also several unknown men surrounding the premises of the company,” Constable Hendricks, Randfontein police spokesperson said.

Hendricks said that during the robbery, the guards were taken to the dispatch department, where the workers were threatened with firearms and then taken to the cash office where they were ordered to lie on the floor.

“The suspects went to the main cash office and used explosives to open the safe and the drop safe. One EPR response officer responded to the alarm, but upon his arrival he was over- powered by the suspects and assaulted. He was robbed of his firearm and bullet proof vest,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks also said when the police and EPR security officers arrived at the scene, they exchanged shots with the suspects. In the process, a response officer was shot in his lower body, but none of the police members were injured.

“The suspects fled the scene in a white BMW and red Polo with an undisclosed amount of money. The registration numbers of the vehicles are unknown,” Hendricks said.

Randfontein detectives are urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects, and can be contacted on 011 278 8100.

“The suspects are armed and presumed to be dangerous, so if anyone sees them or has any information about them, they are advised not to approach or apprehend them. Instead, they should contact the police immediately.”
