The Rand West City Traffic Department (RWCTD) launched the Arrive Alive! road safety campaign today, Thursday, 29 November. It will continue until January next year.
Operations started on the R28 between Randfontein and Westonaria in which the Department joined forces with the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), Randfontein Police, Road Accident Fund (RAF), Immigration Services and Randfontein Taxi Association.
Kenny Mampondo, chief of the RWCTD, said, due to the road carnage that tends to escalate during this busy period of the year, precautions have been taken by law enforcement agencies to bring down the death toll on the roads.

There is also a high rate of crime that escalates more than you can imagine. This operation is not only planned to throughout the festive period, but it is planned to overlap to January 2019,” Mampondo said.
Mampondo said the operation also entails educating drivers and commuters about road safety, and punishing those who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. “We want our roads and communities to be safe,” he said.
Mampondo also said the part of the operation is to identify motorist with outstanding traffic fines and those who have been issued with warrants of arrest and evading the law.
“We have a mini-bus on site to give motorists with outstanding traffic fines a chance to pay them, but those who have warrants of arrests issued by the respective Magistrates’ Courts will be arrested,” Mampondo added.
