VIDEO: RWCLM workers go on strike

Another strike flares up in Randfontein, this time over allowances for travel, transport, cellphone, stand-by and shift that have not been paid, workers said.

On Tuesday morning, Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) workers demonstrated their anger against the municipality about their owed allowances that have not been paid, allegedly since 2016.

Employees were seen outside the premises of the municipality burning tyres and marching to the offices of Mzi Khumalo, the Executive Mayor, and Themba Goba, Municipal Manager, who were both unavailable.

During the protest, municipal workers gathered at the reception area of the Mayor’s office, and made a commitment that they will continue demonstrating until they get their answers.

“However, we have found out that managers have been paid those allowances. Now, how is it [possible] that when they are supposed to pay us they turn a blind eye?” Anonymous asked.

He/ she also said upon finding out that managers receive such allowances, the employees were told that this was a result of a direct order from officials in high ranks.

“At the time, the accounting officer said he would make sure that the money is recovered, but until today, nothing has happened.”
