‘Missing girl’ report sends police, others on wild goose chase

Randfontein Police sent out a strong message to the community that lodging bogus complaints and reports is a crime that will be harshly dealt with.

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander has sent a strong message to the public that lodging bogus cases and complaints is a crime that will be harshly dealt with.

The warning comes following rumours that a 4-year-old girl was kidnapped by two unknown men in front of a bank in Union Street, Randgate on Thursday, 15 November.

The police said upon receiving the report, they, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and members of the community searched all the streets around the Randfontein area looking for the child for hours, with no luck.

“The parents did not come forward to report the child missing at the police station, and no information came forward in order to get hold of the family of the child. After few hours another message was circulated on Facebook stating that the child had been found,” Constable Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson said.

Hendricks added that they could also not confirm where the child was found, who found her, or where she was at that stage.

“That was when we became suspicious that this was a bogus complaint,” Hendricks added.

Manamela added, “A charge of defeating the ends of justice would be opened against the person if the matter was investigated and it was found that the complainant had misled the police by lodging a false case. It is a waste of resources and time, which the police could have better used saving the life of a person who really needed police assistance.”
