Two Simunye youths convicted for burglary

The two suspects were arrested for housebreaking and theft in Simunye.

The 21-year-old Kamohelo Moemo of Simunye was convicted and sentenced two 12 months’ imprisonment. His co-accused, Nicodemus Kgaje, 24, was sentenced to 12 months suspended for five years.

The sentenced was passed by the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on 14 November.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said the two suspects were arrested for housebreaking and theft on 3 March 2018 at about 5.45am in Simunye.

“It is alleged the police were summoned to Simunye after a community member had spotted two young men carrying a TV covered with a blanket. Constables Phillys Ngobeni and Nyiko Hlungwani reacted swiftly and rescued the two suspects from an angry mob,” she said.

A case of burglary and possession of stolen property was registered.

“The two made a brief court appearance and were released on bail. Through a thorough investigation led by detective Pakiso Shomang the case was finalised,” Lefakane said.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, commended the members for a job well done. He thanked the community for the information that led to the arrest and for availing themselves when they were needed by the court. He also extended his gratitude to the Prosecution team.

“This is the result of community policing. Housebreaking remains a challenge in Simunye but we can overcome this if we continue working together,” he concluded.
