Health awareness in Randgate

The programme also brought health screenings to the community.

Several residents of an informal settlement in Randgate attended a health awareness outreach programme held by the Pillar of Strength Church on Thursday, 15 November.

The programme was held in preparation for the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, which runs from 25 November to 10 December, and World Aids Day, which falls on 1 December.

Hector Ngubane, coordinator of the event, said the programme brought health screening and testing for HIV/ Aids, Pap smears, diabetes, cervical and prostate cancer, blood pressure levels, blood glucose and diabetes to the community.

“We have partnered with other organisations to bring a comprehensive health awareness programme to the community,” Hector said.

He added that after the statistics for HIV/Aids infections had indicated that there has been an increase in the number of people infected with virus, the progamme was initiated.

“We saw the need to go to the ground to speak to the community, to inform and engage them on how using condoms is vital in their lives. We want to say to them that they should adhere to primary health care and make sure they they take their medication without defaulting.

Mmotsi Nobela, of the Randfontein Social Crime Prevention said, “We were also roped in to be a part of the programme so that we could create more awareness in line with the upcoming 16 Days of Activism. The message that we want to spread is about promoting safety and social crime prevention so we included sexual offences and other related crimes in our campaign.”
