Foreign national arrested for attempted murder

Local police say a Zimbabwean national is to face charges of attempted murder, being in possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition following incident in Simunye.

Bekkersdal Police arrested a 23-year-old Zimbabwean for attempted murder on Monday, 12 November.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, confirmed that the young man was arrested in connection with an attempted murder that happened in Simunye on Thursday, 25 October.

“It is alleged a 28-year-old victim was shot at but the suspect missed. The victim then reported the matter to the police and a case of attempted murder was registered.

“The case was assigned to detective Constable John Maoba who, together with detective Constable Lucas Mafoko, traced the suspect and recovered the firearm that was used. The suspect will be charged with attempted murder and being in possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon,” Lefakane added.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander commended the officers for a job well done.

“Most of the cases reported in Bekkersdal are committed with firearms, therefore when my officers recover a firearm I really appreciate their efforts and hope that the perpetrator will remain in custody until he is convicted,” Swart said.
