#MunicipalMonday – Blocked drain affects family

In this week's #Municipal Monday, the Herald met with a family about a blocked sewer which has become an uncontrollable problem.

Clifford Thibedi’s family, in Mohlakeng in Ext 11, has not been able to enjoy their home for the last six months.

This is because the the stench from the blocked sewer has made it very difficult for his family to breathe.

With summer here, the family said they are even more worried than ever.

“In the beginning it was bearable, because I used to clear the mess myself, but over the past months, the blockage has become heavier and I can no longer control it. We really cannot do anything about it, especially my wife who is constantly at home. We try to keep all the doors and windows closed,” Clifford said.

Clifford said when he reported the problem to the municipality, he was told that one of the pipes was ‘corrupt’, and would need to be replaced. “But since then, we have not heard anything from them.”

Clifford said what he is most scared of is his eight year-old child falling ill from constantly being exposed to the bacteria.

“We have to watch her all the time, because we do not want to risk anything. We cannot even let her play outside, but honestly, we cannot continue like this, we need help,” Clifford added.
