#ThrowbackThursday – 31 October 1986

The Herald goes back, way back, to 31 October 1986 for this week’s #ThrowbackThursday.

It’s Throwback Thursday, so the Herald went back in time to 31 October 1986. The headline of this paper was ” ‘n Skou om te onthou.”

R’fonteiners love a good show and festival. By the end of October 1986 plans for the first biggest Randfontein Agricultural and Industrial Show were well under way. Leon Deysel, marketer of this event said that people could look forward to seeing miniature horses, veteran motor rally’s and singers such as Charlie Dicks and Clive Bruce.

This event was going run over a three-day period in February the following year.

Other interesting headlines at the time were as follows:

The Westonaria Departmental Preschool held an art exhibition where the abstract art made by the learners was showcased. This also gave parents the opportunity to buy some of the artwork.
Lukas van Vuuren, Erno Bezuidenhout and Leon Fouche spent the whole 12 years of their school careers in the same class. They started Grade 1 together at Laerskool Wheatlands and matriculated from Hoërskool Jan Viljoen in 1986.
Back in 1986 Aquafresh toothpaste cost only R1,39 and women could buy Olay beauty products for R4,99 and R3,99.
Constable Venables came to the rescue when burglars broke into Gerrit Heunis’ house and stole his TV. When the neighbours’ houseworker realised what was going on they immediately called the police. Venables arrested the criminals and returned the stolen property to a very happy Gerrit.
The Impala Dansklub held a Country and Western Dance. Leon and Louis, two country performers were to entertain the crowd.
