Police speak out about cancer in men and women

Randfontein Police recently visited Tambotie Mall to raise awareness about breast and prostate cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a worldwide annual campaign involving thousands of organisations to highlight the importance of breast awareness, education and research.

On Friday, 26 October, the Randfontein Police visited Tambotie Mall to raise awareness about breast and prostate cancer.

“Our aim is not just to create awareness for just one day, because cancer affects our lives 365 days a year. That’s why we decided to run this campaign with our stakeholders,” said Constable Portia Mabala, Randfontein Police Social Crime Prevention officer.

Randfontein Police’s Social Crime Prevention unit, together with the Communication Officer arranged this campaign with the help of the Randfontein Victims’ Empowerment Centre, pastors within the police and gender activists.

Jane Mananiso, a gender activist, requested that all men and women should go for regular check-ups at local clinics.

“Knowledge is power and prevention is better than cure. That’s why it’s important to create awareness throughout the year and to get people to take action and get check-ups,” said Mabala.

In the same breath, Mabala said that they are also creating police visibility in the mall as the festive season is getting closer, which means that more and more crimes are being committed.
