Four arrested for armed robbery of tavern employee

Some of the stolen money, and the firearm used during the robbery, were recovered by Bekkersdal Police – four arrested.

The teamwork of the Bekkersdal detectives led to the arrest of four suspects aged between 22 and 28, as well as the recovery of stolen cash and a firearm used in a recent armed robbery.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the arrests were made during the night of Wednesday, 24 October, two days after the armed robbery in Godlo Street, Bekkersdal.

“It is alleged that the victim, who works as a cashier at a local tavern, was going home carrying the day’s takings when she was accosted by two men, one armed with a firearm. He allegedly pointed it at her and robbed her of the money. The matter was reported to the police and a case of robbery was opened. The investigation into the matter revealed that the robbery was actually orchestrated by someone else who works at the tavern. The suspects were arrested at their homes and some of the stolen money and the firearm were recovered,” she added.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, commended the members on a job well done. “I want to thank them for their swift reaction and for ensuring that the perpetrators were brought to book,” Swart said.
