AB Phokombe marks the International Day of the Girl Child

A total of 150 learners from AB Phokompe in Mohlakeng received dignity packs as part of celebrating International Day of the Girl Child recently.

AB Phokompe Secondary School marked the International Day of the Girl Child on Thursday, 11 October.

The event highlighted and addressed the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girl empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

Under the theme, #With Her: A Skilled GirlForce, more than 150 learners joined the Rand West City MMC for Health and Social Development, Annah Gela, who addressed the learners and reminded them of the historic struggles faced by women and girls.

MMC Gela thanked the sponsors and partners who contributed towards the hosting of the event, as well as donating items for dignity packs in support of underprivileged learners at the school.

Jeanne du Plessis of Procter and Gamble (P&G) said, “This is a critical time for girls and we need to all partner to help them maintain and grow their confidence, so that they stay committed to their education and their future.”

Jeanne said P&G’s Always Keeping Girls in School programme delivers puberty education and donates sanitary pads to girls in need.

She said the programme has reached over 100 000 learners in South Africa and other African countries since its establishment in 2011.

“As part of the celebrations, both girls and boys taking part in the day’s event received an engaging puberty education lesson, facilitated by the Footprints Foundation. The Footprints Foundation is an NGO focusing on the dignity of girls and boys in previously disadvantaged communities. They have roped in other key partners, who are working towards the advancement of girls’ rights and promoting their development in South Africa and the continent,” Jeanne said.
