Police give tips for staying safe at home

Randfontein Police give tips about safety at home in an effort to reduce burglaries at a residential premises.

The Randfontein Police have shared several tips about safety at home in the hope that they will prevent housebreaking and theft.

Constable Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson, compiled the list below:

• Know all emergency numbers.

• Keep your cellphone with you at all times.

• Never leave keys in a gate or lock.

• Always change the locks on the door on the outside of the house if you move into a new home or after keys have been lost or stolen.

• Make provision for good lighting outside.

• Mail left in the gate is a sign that nobody is home – ask a friend or a neighbour to keep a regular eye on your property and to remove mail.

• Curtains should be closed after dark to prevent suspects from observing the activities inside your home.

• A watchdog is a very good early warning system and the unexplained death of a watchdog is a warning sign of a possible burglary.

• Keep a fully charged torch available at night and have your cellphone at hand.

• If your house alarm goes off or you hear strange noises, switch on the outside light and investigate with caution. Don’t go outside before you are sure that it is safe.

• If you have a panic button, keep it close at hand and use it if you see anyone who doesn’t belong on your property.

• Install security gates on doors leading directly from inside your house to your garage.
