Two arrested for illegal firearm

Westonaria Police were conducting routine patrols around Westonaria when they spotted and searched two suspicious men.

Two men were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm while the Westonaria Police were conducting routine patrols around Westonaria.

According to Warrant Officer Raymond Sebonyane, spokesperson for the Westonaria Police, the incident took place on 18 October at about 2.30pm.

The two officers searched the men and confiscated one 9mm pistol, one magazine, three live 9mm rounds and an okapi knife.

“Sergeant Joseph Monaheng and Constable Ronney Mafafo were conducting a routine patrol around Westonaria. They spotted two suspicious men in an open field in Van der Bijl Street. The two officers searched the men and confiscated one 9mm pistol, one magazine, three 9mm live rounds and an okapi knife,” said Sebonyane.

The pistol’s serial number was filed off. The two were then arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and possession of a dangerous weapon.

“The two suspects, aged 24 and 30, are expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon,” he added.

Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, the Westonaria Police station commander applauded the members for a job well done and being vigilant as recently there were a lot of robberies in that area where firearms were being used.
