Six study hacks that could help you during exams

If you are in matric and either writing or preparing for the end of year exams, this might help you mentally and physically.

With matriculants on edge about the end of year exams, it’s said there are six ways you might be able to help them cope with the pressure and ease the stress.

1. Take a brisk walk

It’s been proven that exercise can boost your memory and brain power. Research conducted by Dr Chuck Hillman of the University of Illinois provides evidence that about 20 minutes exercise before an exam can improve performance.

2. Drink a Red Bull

New research suggests the Red Bull Energy Drink can temporarily boost some aspects of cognition. The randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind study of 24 healthy volunteers found Red Bull had a positive effect on memory performance.

In particular, the study found significant improvements in the accuracy and speed of working and episodic memory 30 minutes after consuming the drink.

3. Create flashcards

Quickly test your knowledge of key concepts, definitions, quotes and formulas with flashcards.

4. Take regular study breaks

When your brain is hard at work, it’s good to take regular study breaks to help your brain absorb more information and keep you focused! Take a short break after 45 to 50 minutes of studying, as your focus and concentration will become impaired after this period. Anything new studied after an hour and a half does not get assimilated.

5. Study on the move

Though we may be creatures of habit – information retention actually improves when you vary the places where you study.

6. Use scents

Spraying an unfamiliar scent while you’re studying is one of the study methods that can actually help jog your memory by spraying it again right before an exam.
