It’s Throwback Thursday, so the Herald went back in time to 17 October, 1986 when the highlight story on the front page featured the headline ‘Só word ons arm skoliere gehelp!’
The article was about how the principals of local schools were so concerned about the less fortunate learners that they started a combined fund-raising project. They held a competition called Monument Toyota School competition and 50 per cent of the profit went into the West Rand Youth Trust fund.
The Herald spoke to Fred Hayward who was the principal of West Ridge High at the time. ” It would really be a shame if a learner could not attend school because of his or her financial situation,” he said.
He also said that the community should come together to make this fundraising project a success.
