Ten Westcol students have left both the town and the country, on their way to China, where they will be spending a year.
According to Oblivious Motlhasedi, the project assistant, the students are going to China for a Work Integrated Learning Tourism, Hospitality & Chef Internship Programme for 12 months.
A send-off ceremony was held at Expresso la Vintage Coffee Shop in Greenhills on Friday, 12 October and can best be described as a very emotional event. Parents and faculty members gave their best wishes and advice to the eight tourism students and two hospitality and chef students.
“The main purpose is to create opportunities for the learners to gain work experience by integrating them in a real work learning methodology that is utilised by the top Chinese and international hotels and tourist sites,” Oblivious said.
The students that left for China on 16 October are Kagiso Phuti, Innocentia Devenhuis, Shane Morwane, Rito Manganyi, Thabo Tsholetsane, Tsholefelo Choma, Angelina Ditshabako Moleli, Kgontse Christen Maswikeng, Michelle Manzini and Lawrence Bobotyane.
They will be completing the programme in Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan in the People’s Republic of China.
Sello Mogotsi, acting principal of Westcol, said that he hopes that they will return with new knowledge and life skills.
“They should all be like sponges and learn about the workplace as well as the unique culture in China. When or if they return, they can share their skills in their industries in South Africa.”
