Teachers appreciated on World Teachers’ Day

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Education conveyed a message of support and appreciation to all teachers in the province in celebration of World Teachers Day.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Education thanked all teachers in the province and wished them well when World Teachers’ Day was celebrated last Friday, 5 October.

He also emphasised the importance of education.

Lesufi said, “Teachers or educators are the foundation of our civilization for their role in nurturing, educating and inspiring future leaders, professionals, artisans and workers. On this day, we wish to convey a message of support and appreciation to all the teachers for their dedication in shaping the future of all children and sometimes going beyond the call of duty.”

He added schools stand or fall on the leadership of the school.

“We commend educators who work tirelessly and with passion to groom future leaders of this country. As society changes, teachers should sharpen their skills and knowledge. That is why the Department invests in the further development of educators. To that end, the Gauteng Department of Education has invested substantial sums of money to train educators to use and adapt ICT in over 300 township-based schools. All these educators have been provided laptops with the latest content so that they can be innovative.”

Steve Mabona, Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesperson said they are also proud of what they colloquially call e-educators that were introduced in the Gauteng school environment.

“These are versatile educators who can easily utilise a computer to teach and contribute towards the realisation of the fourth industrial revolution. We have a responsibility to continue providing the necessary support to these e-educators of the future.

“We reiterate the principle that educators and learners should work and learn in a safe and conducive environment. For that reason, violence against our educators should be strongly condemned and as a Department we will not hesitate to act against perpetrators. Educators should be assured of the Department’s commitment to ensuring a conducive environment for teaching and professional development.”

Lesufi concluded, “We would like to applaud teachers choosing to work tirelessly for the education of our children and for not being dismayed by some of the challenges they face in their place of work. Their enormous contribution is highly appreciated and we will continuously offer support where necessary.”
