Police help keep kids off street

The safety of children is one of our top priorities – Bekkersdal Police about a School Holiday Programme held recently.

Sergeant Kamuela Banda, a Bekkersdal Police Social Crime Prevention officer held a School Holiday Programme over five days in partnership with other government departments.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the programme, which ran from 1 to 5 October catered for the area’s primary school children.

“The main objective was to get the kids off the streets. In many instances, it was found that the children were being left alone during school holidays. The safety of our children is one of our top priorities,” she said.

They ensured that the children of Bekkersdal were safe and that there were no cases affecting children reported for the period. The Department of Health, Rand West Public Safety, the Departments of Community Safety, Correctional Services, and Education, and Coca-Cola were all involved in the programme.

The programme was a success and at the end, Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander thanked all the departments and sponsors for it, and encouraged the children to study and dream big.
