It’s Throwback Thursday, so the Herald went back in time to 10 October, 1986 when the highlight story on the front page featured the headline Lifegro is alive and well!
Rumours that the Lifegro Mall, a one-stop shopping centre in Randfontein, was doomed before it had even opened, were denounced by the developers.
In an interview with the Herald at that time, the developers, the Shackman Brothers, said the centre was going on as planned, except that the opening had to be postponed due to technical delays, such as the clothing industry being bound to set seasons which did not comply with their planned opening date in October.
However, the assurance was given that the Sutherland side of the centre would be almost fully occupied by Christmas that year and be ready for the Christmas trade. Of the shops still to open, four were fashion stores, two were shoe stores and the others included are butchery/ delicatessen/ bakery, a greengrocer, furniture outlets, and kiosks etc.
The Herald quoted Mr Shackman who said, “We regret that we could not open with a bang as we would have liked to, but we felt it necessary to give the benefit of a grand opening to the majority of our tenants.”
