The Randfontein Taxi Association marked Transport Month by training 23 of its taxi queue marshals who are said to play an important role in the industry.
Nonhlanhla Mlangeni, head of the queue marshals in Randfontein, said the training entailed the marshals taking on vast new responsibilities. She said part of the programme was to issue the marshals with uniforms and name tags so that they could be easily identified.
“We have done this because whenever people wanted their services, they could not find them. The training covered the role of the queue marshal holistically,” Nonhlanhla said. “
Nonhlanhla added that the training also aimed at teaching the marshals about what is expected of them when they are on duty.
“In the training, the marshals were given the responsibility of checking whether taxis are roadworthy or not. If for example they discover a taxi is not compliant with the law, they now have the power to make sure that the driver is prohibited from ferrying passengers,” she said.
Nonhlanhla said the queue marshals will have the responsibility of making sure that no taxi driver will be driving under the influence of liquor or drugs.
“They also have the authority to stop drivers from operating, if they suspect that they are under any influence,” she said. She also said it will be the job of the marshals to make sure that taxis are clean and assist passengers with loading their goods onto the taxis.
“In a way, they are the traffic officers for the taxi rank,” Nonhlanhla concluded.
