Cupcakes of Hope visited Village Square Shopping Centre on Saturday, 29 September to bring hope to children who have cancer.
Amanda van Wyk, who coordinates the annual fundraiser in Randfontein, said the aim was to raise awareness of childhood cancer and funds for children with cancer who are in need of medical and financial assistance by getting members of the community involved. She said the fundraiser also sought to educate people about cancer, especially among children.
“All the money that we are raising here today will be donated to the families of children who have cancer, where their medical aid has been exhausted or they do not have medical aid at all,” Amanda said.
She thanked all the volunteers who were part of the fundraiser. “Everyone did this out of their own pockets, and they did not get any reward for the work they did. They simply did it because they wanted to help strengthen the initiative and help the needy.”
Amanda went on to say the initiative is making a very big difference in the lives of those who are needy. “We believe that everyone can make a difference in this world, all you need is a bit of time and loads of love.
“The only requirement is to become a Cupcake Angel is that your cupcake must be made with love and dedication,” she added.
She said the cupcake initiative assists up to 70 cancer patients every month by contributing to their medical treatments or their expenses such as food, clothing and transportation for hospital visits.
The national initiative raised more than R2 million at the 79 malls that were involved this year.
