Women prayer groups celebrate Heritage Day

Women Prayer Groups from various denominations in Mohlakeng gathered for Heritage Month celebrations.

Mohlakeng’s Uniting Reformed Church came alive, but in a different way, with major heritage celebrations on Thursday, 20 September.

Giving the usual church uniform a miss, Women Prayer Groups from various denominations in Mohlakeng in their traditional regalia, among them Setswana, Zulu, Sotho and Xhosasang, sang and danced.

Some cultures with roots in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and even deep into the Asian continent were also represented.

Guest speaker, Dorah Marema, who is a climate activist from Polokwane, paid tribute to the role women played in the 21st century. She added that socioeconomic challenges such as drugs, alcohol and crime have engulfed the nation to extreme proportions.

She emphasised the importance of family, saying, “As women we need to have a vision and a relationship with God, just like Naomi and Ruth in the Bible. We have a responsibility to hand down our heritage to our families.”

Also speaking during this occasion was councillor Gladys Khoza, Rand West City Local Municipality MMC for Roads, Water and Storm Drainage.

She expressed her joy at the event and said she is committed to working with Rainbow, the mother body of all Women Prayer Groups.

“My task is to work with you. You are welcome to knock on my door so we can help each other and others.”
