Rapist gets life in jail

Bekkersdal man gets life sentence for raping woman last year.

The 30-year-old David Rasehlapa has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a women in Zuurbekom.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, Rasehlapa was found guilty on three counts of rape, convicted and sentenced in the Westonaria Regional Court on Wednesday, 19 September.

He committed the crime at about 8pm on 31 May last year.

“The accused invited the victim for supper. She was 27 years old at the time. After supper the accused became violent and started threatening the victim. He repeatedly raped her and kept her in his room. The victim managed to get her cellphone from the accused and alerted her sister. The police were contacted and the suspect was arrested in the early hours of the next morning. He has since been in custody.

“Through the hard work of a dedicated investigating officer, Warrant Officer Johannes Makona and his professionalism in gathering evidence, the accused was brought to book.”

Lieutenant Colonel Florence Zondi, the acting Bekkersdal Police station commander, applauded the member for the good work and thanked the prosecution team, witnesses and victim for their bravery.

“This must serve as a motivation to other victims of crime and a warning to perpetrators that crime doesn’t pay.”
