Hitchhikers warned after two more rapes

Hitchhikers beware! Police concerned about your safety after two women were raped.

Bekkersdal Police are concerned about the safety of hitchhikers on the N12 after two of them were raped recently.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson explained the victims are either raped and robbed or robbed of their valuables and money.

She said in the latest incident two women were raped between 3pm and 9.45pm after they took a lift in a blue Renault Cleo near the Nufcor business area in Zuurbekom on Sunday, 23 September.

“According to the victim, she took a lift from Johannesburg and inside the vehicle there were four occupants including the driver. The victim further alleges that it was a woman and three men. The driver drove to a Sasol garage near Waterworks where the two men were dropped off. The women were left with the driver.

“He then drove to Nufcor and took a right turn onto a gravel road. He then stopped and produced a knife. He also took off his belt and tied up one of the victims. He then undressed one of them and raped her, and then the other. He then held them there until 9.45pm. He drove off and dropped one of the victims on the N12 and left the other. She managed to get assistance from a motorists who then contacted the police.”

She added the suspect is still at large and an investigation into the matter is continuing.
