W’aria residents angry over rubbish in the streets

Residents of Westonaria have expressed anger at the municipality regarding the dumping of garbage, specifically in the CBD.

Westonaria residents are upset mainly about two things – firstly, garbage being dumped and secondly, the dumped garbage being burnt, allegedly by the municipality.

Dawood Gathoo pointed out the issue specifically in the CBD, along the R28 and at the corner of Edelweis and Botha Streets.

“There has also been dumping on Davis Street at the parking lot,” Gathoo said.

We are paying for refuse removal, and this is what happens. To make matters worse, cleaners are instructed by the municipality to set the refuse alight.”

Residents said the garbage is causing a toxic environment. Photo submitted.

Gathoo added the practice is unfair, considering the rates and taxes owners have to pay to the municipality.

“As residents, we really wonder how the mayor and the municipality would react if we started dumping garbage on their doorsteps.”

Gathoo said not only is the area filthy, the smell is unbearable. He said often it is difficult to breathe, and that the situation may have serious health implications. He said shop owners whose businesses are near the illegal dumping sites were bearing the brunt.
