Droogeheuvel water project in final phase

The Droogeheuvel Bulk Water Supply Project is in the final phases after a few failed attempts over the past 15 years.

Contractors working on the Droogeheuvel Bulk Water Supply Project are planning to finish the project early in 2019.

The end is in sight after many failed attempts to complete the job. According to Alwyn van Tonder, DA Ward 3 councillor, work on the project has been going on for more than 15 years, as the first two contractors failed to deliver.

The current contractor, Ultimate Dynamics, has been working hard since taking over in February 2017. They work on the project in collaboration with Maragela Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd.

Millions have already been spent on this project and we are happy that it’s in its final phase. This project will supply water to new housing developments such as the Afri-Village in Greenhills where 4 000 units are being built,” Alwyn said.

He said the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) is using its internal funds to finance the project. He added that RWCLM has subsidised a human settlements grant of R60 million, which was supposed to be used for the project, but instead was invested in the controversial VBS Mutual Bank (VBS).

According to Kobus Pretorius, the Ultimate Dynamics project site agent, the water system includes a 20 million litre reservoir as well as a pressure tower, which is a two-million litre reservoir.

“The system is going to be connected to Rand Water. From there the water will go to the reservoirs that will supply the houses. We are busy with the pump station and if everything goes according to plan, we will finish early next year,” he said.

Kobus Pretorius, site agent for Ultimate Dynamics and Alwyn van Tonder, Ward 3 DA councilor are excited that the Droogeheuvel Bulk Water Supply Project is in its final phase.
