Man hijacked near cemetery – Police come to the rescue

Randfontein Police came to the rescue of a hijack victim by giving chase, arresting both suspects and recovering the vehicle yesterday.

The Randfontein Police arrested two men who hijacked a vehicle and kidnapped a man, and recovered both the hijacked and getaway vehicles on Wednesday, 19 September.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, it is alleged by the victim, a 28-year-old man, that he was hijacked at approximately 12.40pm near the cemetery in Mohlakeng.

He was stationary at a stop street in the area while driving a company vehicle when he was forced at gunpoint to drive to some nearby bushes by the hijackers. He was tied up, blindfolded and forced into another vehicle. The suspects then drove off with him,” Ernst said.

Meanwhile, members attached to the Visible Policing Unit of the Randfontein Police were busy conducting a vehicle control point on the R41 towards Kagiso when they spotted a Toyota sedan executing a hasty U-turn and taking a gravel road, speeding away from them.

“The members gave chase and when they managed to bring the other vehicle to a standstill, the driver and passenger started running. The members managed to catch both men and then discovered the blindfolded victim in the Toyota. The men, aged 52 and 45, were placed under arrest for hijacking and kidnapping,” she added.
