Multi-disabled residents shine on stage

On a day like this we completely remove 'dis' and focus on the 'ability' — CEO of Connie Mulder.

This year’s Mamma Mia-themed Eisteddfod held at the Connie Mulder Centre on Saturday, 15 September was all fun and games, accompanied by some impressive on-stage performances.

Multi-disabled residents from five centres – Logwood, Sunfield, Die Oord, Wesrand and Connie Mulder – showcased their talents in mixed teams and at least 26 items, which ranged from speech choir, solo dance, Mamma Mia, play, drama, solo, duets and choir and more.

However, according to Gordon Henney, CEO of Connie Mulder Centre, all those who took part in the day’s activities were winners by virtue of their participation.

“We are talking about people who are so-called disabled. On a day like this we completely remove ‘dis’ and focus on the ‘ability’,” Gordon said.

He said the annual challenge helps all contestants to regain their dignity and achieve personal growth.

“They are doing things on stage that able-bodied people would be scared to do as they participate in something that will make them feel a sense of accomplishment,” he said.

Gordon added, “It is important for us at Connie Mulder to associate with other centres and host an event where we have some fun with our peers and share common ground, laughs and each other’s company.”

“It is wonderful, and at the end of the day, one must realise that everyone who participates is a winner,” Gordon added.
