Toekies residents receive 34 title deeds

The municipality recently issued 34 title deeds to residents of Toekomsrus.

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) issued 34 title deeds to residents of Toekomsrus on Friday, 7 September.

The handover was done at the Toekomsrus Community Hall. The eldest beneficiary of a title deed is 79 years old, whilst the youngest is 28.

According to Caroline Setsiba from the Office of the Executive Mayor, the programme of handing title deeds to beneficiaries is part of government’s Thuma Mina (Send Me) campaign across Rand West City.

The programme of handing title deeds to beneficiaries is part of government’s Thuma Mina (Send Me) campaign across Rand West City.

“This was a demonstration that government acknowledges the plight of the elderly while ensuring that our current generation of young people benefit from the transformation to improve their lives.

“Toekomsrus has gone through a sad history as a result of our fractured past. The beneficiaries who received their title deeds are part of a much bigger group of residents of Rand West City as a whole whose pride and dignity are being restored through homeownership.

“It is part of the broader government programme of eradicating homelessness and insecure tenure, as well as the lack of access to basic services such as electricity, running water and sanitation in our communities.”

Khumalo said it has been a long wait, but finally, these beneficiaries from Toekomsrus can now safely and proudly say that they own the homes they occupy.

Mzi Khumalo, the RWCLM Executive Mayor said he was delighted to be part of transferring property ownership to the people of Toekomsrus. He did however, raise concerns about family feuds as a result of title deeds.

“I regard property ownership and the provision of housing as part of the process of development and economic growth in our growing City. Therefore I have a historic duty to ensure the implementation of timeless ideas as enshrined in the Freedom Charter. It has been a long wait, but finally, these beneficiaries from Toekomsrus can now safely and proudly say that they own the homes they occupy.”
