Handbags of Love Project: Herald exceeds target!

The Herald launched a project in late August and reached its target of collecting 37 handbags. Now for phase two ...

The Herald asked for 37 handbags for its Handbags of Love Project, and got 41!

Clinton Botha, Herald editor confirmed the good news on Thursday, 13 September.

“Yesterday I got a call from an organisation – the Indigo Helping Hand Foundation in Middelvlei, which donated 33 handbags. Our target was to collect 37 handbags (second-hand and preferably in a good condition) but thanks to our loyal community’s support for the project our expectations were exceeded. We are extremely grateful for everyone’s contribution.

“We now move onto phase two of the project and that is to fill the handbags with basic necessities. Those who wish to contribute can make up a hamper of their choice – nothing too extravagant or expensive – or donate items from the list below. Simply put the donations in a plastic bag and drop them off at our office at 113 Kenneth Avenue, Greenhills or give us a call and we will arrange to have it collected.”

The Riet Family Guidance Centre, a non-governmental welfare and educational organisation in Randfontein, which is dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of women and their dependent children, will be the beneficiary.

Clinton went on to say, “The centre currently houses 37 women with their dependent children, all of whom are victims of the xenophobic violence that occurred on the R28 in 2009. They are aged between 25 and mid-40s. Women’s Month has come and gone, but who said it has to end? Who said the violence against women has ended? The project is simple – let’s give these women some comfort by giving them a handbag filled with basic necessities.”

The items for the handbags may include:

• Sanitary products

• Body spray

• Make-up

• Notebook

• Hair brush

• Pen and pencil

• Pack of tissues

• Lip balm

• Hand lotion

• Mints or gum

• A snack

• Face cloth

• Toothbrush

• Toothpaste

• Soap

• Body lotion

• Deodorant
