Two foreigners arrested for illegal mining

Local police are continuing their clamp-down on illegal mining in the Randfontein area with the arrest of two Zimbabwean nationals over the weekend.

Bekkersdal Police arrested two men, Zimbabwean nationals, aged 20 and 21 for illegal mining in Zuurbekom on Friday, 7 September.

The arrests came as a result of a police crime-prevention operation in the area.

“After our officers had received a tip-off about an illegal gold extraction plant in Zuurbekom near Westonaria, they proceeded to the area and busted two suspects. An apparatus used for the illegal operations was also confiscated,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander also applauded the officers for stopping illegal mining operations.
