Passengers hijack minibus

LATEST hijacking in Randfontein: A group of suspects, who were passengers along with several others, hijacked the minibus they were travelling in.

Police in Bekkersdal have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects who were originally passengers after they hijacked a white Toyota Quantum with registration number BN 63 MT.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the incident happened at about 7.15pm on Wednesday, 5 September.

“It is alleged that the driver, 46, had transported 14 passengers from Westonaria to Simunye. As they were exiting the vehicle, he noticed that four of them didn’t get out. While travelling along Kopanang Street, two of the remaining four passengers asked the driver to drop them off at the next stop sign,” she said.

He brought the vehicle to a stop and the two passengers approached him and started to assault him. They pushed him to the back of the vehicle and forced him under the seat before driving off.

“The demanded that he hand over his bank card and PIN code as well as his phone before dropping him off in the open veld near Speruperu,” Lefakane said.

He walked to a nearby shack and called the police with assistance from the resident. The matter was reported to the Bekkersdal Police and an investigation is under way.
