Two Randfontein social work students are planning a Girl Empowerment Programme in Randfontein. The purpose of the event is to bring together local businesses and inform the community about various organisation where young women will be able to get help regarding abuse and other societal issues.

• 8 September: Big Spring Fun Day for frail-care patients

A local frail care unit’s patients can look forward to a morning filled with Spring Day celebrations. It will start at 10am, with a performance by a group of children from Michelle’s Acrobatic Academy. At 11am, Shaylin Potgieter, a Grade 1 learner from Laerskool Randfontein, who recently represented South Africa at Talent America in New York, is going to sing. The staff from Hillside Pets in Krugersdorp are going to braai some meat, which was donated by Westgate Meat Market, to treat the patients to something special. On top of all this, Lizelle Colsby, from SMH Hair in Randfontein has volunteered to pamper all the patients to make them look beautiful for the new season and to feel extra special for the day! The public is invited to attend a CPF public meeting to be held at Clan Doyle at the corner of Elizabeth Road and Road nr 9, Bootha plots from 6.30pm. Henry Boyce, CPF Operations coordinator said after a year’s good cooperation between the CPF, police and public, whereupon good successes were obtained, it is in the best interest of each and everyone to attend the meeting for his/ her family’s sake and safety. The CPF has already been active on the plots for three years.

According to Brett Bellinger, Marketing Director of PUMA South Africa, the Beat Bolt sprint has been a hit in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Runners will need to give their all over a 100m sprint. This section of the route will be timed. The runner (male and female) to clock the fastest time over the 100m will take home a Puma shopping voucher to the value of R10 000. Starting in front of FNB Bank City, runners and walkers will be treated to a 10km route experience that will highlight iconic landmarks and feature live performances by a host of Joburg’s leading performing arts groups. • 5 October: The Forgiven at cinemas

While it has been two decades since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission concluded, bringing to a close South Africa’s cathartic period of reckoning with its violent history of racial segregation, director Roland Joffé’s new film returns to that time to grapple with the terrible truths of apartheid and its legacy. Based on Michael Ashton’s play, The Archbishop and the Antichrist (the playwright collaborated on the screenplay with Joffé), THE FORGIVEN is a fictionalised account of Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s efforts as the head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to confront the atrocities of apartheid in an attempt to heal and unite South Africa. The film will be screened in South African cinemas nationwide.

• 10 November: Chris Tucker at the Ticketpro Dome

Funnyman Chris Tucker, best known for playing the role of Detective James Carter in Rush Hour, will be bringing his comedy tour to South Africa. Chris became a favourite on Russell Simmons’ HBO Def Comedy Jam in the 1990s and came to prominence in his first starring role, the 1995 film cult classic Friday, starring alongside Ice Cube who celebrated his 20th anniversary in 2015. In 1997, Tucker embarked on his first production as executive producer and co-starred in the hit movie, Money Talks with Charlie Sheen and shortly after appeared in Luc Besson’s highly successful The Fifth Element. In 2006, Chris negotiated an unprecedented $25 million salary to appear in Rush Hour 3, which made him the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. Chris co-starred in the 2013 Oscar-nominated film, Silver Linings Playbook with Robert de Niro, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. In 2015, his first stand-up film, Chris Tucker Live was released exclusively on Netflix. To date, Tucker has starred in films that have collectively grossed over one billion dollars in box office sales world-wide. He is currently on a successful US and international comedy tour, receiving rave reviews from all over the world. Outside of comedy, Chris is a dedicated humanitarian, spending much of his spare time travelling around the world, doing philanthropic work to make a difference through his Chris Tucker Foundation.
