Fake, expired food seized in R’fontein

Various shops in Randfontein were raided by the Health Department and many food products that were not fit for human consumption were confiscated .

The Department of Health Services for the West Rand District Municipality recently raided various in shops Randfontein, and confiscated many food products that were not fit for human consumption.

This is part of the nationwide outcry that has condemned unfit food products sold to the public, particularly in townships.

Many of the products that were confiscated were found to have been expired, with some improperly labelled.

Themba Makhoba, Manager of the Department said many products were confiscated on the West Rand in terms of the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 54 of 1972.

Makhoba said the products were condemned for the following reasons: improper labelling and packaging, dented containers, expired products, and food products without proper labelling.

“Shop owners have a responsibility to sell food that is fresh and that has been manufactured in premises that are compliant with the law,” Makhoba said.

He said in order to ensure that people are safe, the law will be enforced on those who are manufacturing and trading in food products.
