Big party held for disadvantaged school girls

Women's Month celebrations and activities in Randfontein ended on a high note with the Women in Music Festival.

Partygoers of all sorts braved a chilly weekend (Saturday, 25 and Sunday, 26 August) to support the first annual Women in Music Festival held at Mohlakeng’s Patrick ‘Ace’ Ntsoelengoe Stadium.

Ms Jones Sounds, DJ Ms Jones, the municipality and national artists and DJs were in control of proceedings and put on a show not soon to be forgotten.

The event was for a good cause as proceeds from the gig went towards buying toiletries and sanitary towels for girl learners from disadvantaged families in Rand West City.

“This charitable event aimed at celebrating and saluting all women who are making iconic moves in any industry across all walks of life,” said Lerato Paai, head of Stakeholder Relations and Protocol in the office of the Executive Mayor.

She added that the event created a big social lifestyle movement for the people of Rand West as a whole, and will also attract people from outside the region through sheer enjoyment and music. She said the experience is also dedicated to our City’s residents by having them engage and participate in an event that will enhance and strengthen relationships and networks and connect the residents of the West Rand with the rest of the world.

“This music festival was the first of its kind in terms of an All Star Women in Music Line-Up and Production, from the DJs to performing artists as well as the MCs and the behind the scenes crew.”

Ms Jones is a top woman DJ from Bekkersdal who has shared the stage with many others in the field including DJ Zinhle and Lerato Kganyago. She is also a radio DJ for West Side FM. Apart from the Women In Music event that is aimed at community upliftment, Ms Jones has also engaged in many other community-related campaigns in Rand West City, such as when she took the time to read stories for kids at the Randfontein Library.

The festival also provided an opportunity for local artists and dance crews to show what they are made of.

Lerato added that the event was a huge success and that the crowds were well-behaved.
