Man scammed by a fake traditional healer

Upon the victim's return, he found that the suspect had left with his cellphone.

A 52-year-old man was arrested for fraud after he allegedly scammed his victim out of a cellphone, after he pretended to be a traditional healer.

Westonaria Police said the man was arrested on Tuesday, 28 August for defrauding the victim on Wednesday, 20 June.

“It is alleged that Sergeant Audrey Sefara and Constable Caleb Rakoba were patrolling around the Westonaria CBD when they were approached by the victim, who pointed out the suspect,” Warrant Officer Raymond Sebonyane, Westonaria police spokesperson said.

Sebonyane said the victim also alleged that the suspect had promised him traditional medicine that would bring him luck.

He allegedly instructed the victim to buy a Lottery ticket, telling him to leave his cellphone behind. However, when the victim went back, he found the suspect had disappeared, with his cellphone.

Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, Westonaria station commander, commended the police for arresting the suspect, but said that people should be careful not to become victims of such scams.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.
