Five arrested for livestock theft in Bekkersdal

Five arrested as Bekkersdal Police recover over 10 stolen sheep at a shack.

The Bekkersdal Police bust five men for livestock theft in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal on Tuesday, 28 August after following a tip-off.

Police said they were informed of eleven stolen sheep that were being kept at a nearby shack.

“Police proceeded to the shack in question and on their arrival, they noticed a bakkie parked near the shack with five men on its back,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

Lefakane said when suspects saw the police, they attempted to escape, but were all caught as the whole area had been surrounded by the police.

These are some of the sheep that were recovered in the arrest.

She added that the suspects, who are between the ages of 23 and 39 years, will appear before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

The recovered sheep have been handed over to the SPCA for safekeeping until their rightful owner makes a claim.

“We are appealing to livestock owners to mark their stock, as the ones that were recovered have no markings, which is going to make it difficult for them to be claimed,” Lefakane added.

Colonel Tinus Swart, station commander of the Bekkersdal Police, applauded the people who informed the police about the livestock, saying, “This shows that when we work together, we can do more”.
