Business targeted by armed gang: Two at large

Two of three armed men are still on the loose following a business robbery in the Bekkersdal area late last week.

A 29-year-old suspect has been arrested while two others are still at large following a business robbery in Bekkersdal late last week.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the robbery of a tuck shop took place at about 1.40pm.

Police said it is alleged the shop owner was inside the shop when three armed men entered.

“One of the suspects pointed at the victim with a firearm and instructed him not to move. The other two started collecting money from the counter and took the victim’s cellphone. They also took the plasma TV and then fled on foot,” Lefakane said.

Lefakane said the owner of the tuck shop managed to alert the community immediately after the incident. One of the suspects, who was in possession of the TV, was caught by members of the community. The other two suspects are still at large.

“Police were called and a case of business robbery was opened,” Lefakane added.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal station commander, applauded the community for taking part in apprehending one of the suspect, but also urged people not to take the law into their own hands, citing that this is against the law.
