Joint crackdown leads to arrests, shutdown of shebeens

Four shebeens and one scrap yard shut down in major crackdown by Randfontein Police and CPF.

The Randfontein Police and Community Police Forum (CPF) held yet another successful anti-crime campaign last week.

According to Henry Boyce, the CPF operations coordinator, they wanted to give a stern warning about illicit dealings, especially the purchase of stolen copper.

“With cable theft steadily on the rise, the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), business owners and the Randfontein community are losing millions of rands,” Boyce said.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, said four arrests were made during the operation and four shebeens and one scrap yard were shut down. Liquor was also confiscated during the operation.

“The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from dealing in liquor without a licence, possession of dagga to undocumented persons,” Ernst said.

She added that the aim of the campaign was to address illegal shebeens and scrap metal dealers in the industrial area of Randfontein and the surrounding agricultural holdings.

“These operations will be conducted continuously to rid Randfontein of the criminal element,” Ernst added.

According to Boyce, 28 830ml of alcohol were confiscated during the operation.
