Police concerned about teenage pregnancy

Police created awareness to learners about teen pregnancy and engaging in sexual activities at an early stage.

Bekkersdal Police have warned learners in the Waterpan area about teenage pregnancy.

The Bekkersdal Social Crime Prevention Unit, in partnership with the Westrand District Health Department and the Department of Community Safety, recently conducted a school talk for Grade 8 and 9 learners at Ezulwini Intermediate School in Waterpan.

The purpose of the visit was to create awareness among the learners about teen pregnancy and engaging in sexual activities at an early stage. They were also encouraged to stay away from gang related activities, bullying and abuse of alcohol and drugs.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal police spokesperson said, “Police also reassured the learners about their safety around the school and assured them that every matter related to crime that affects the school will be monitored by a social crime prevention (SCP) officer and sector manager.”

Lefakane added that the school management was very impressed with the initiative and applauded the departments for their involvement and ensuring that the learners receive information from all angles.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, advised the learners to be committed to their studies to secure their future.
