Kids home alone when criminals strike

Two thieves targeted a house and fled with valuables after mom went to the shop and left the kids to play outside.

Two men have been arrested after allegedly stealing three smartphones and a water tap at a house in the Bekkersdal area.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said the incident happened in Legwale Street, Bekkersdal at about 2.30pm on Sunday, 5 August.

“It is alleged the mother went to the shop, leaving the kids playing outside. She came back and when she found the water tap stolen, she asked the children what had happened.

They told her that while she was out two men entered the house, stole the phones and took out the tap before fleeing on foot.

“The mother reported the matter to the police. Preliminary investigations were conducted which led to the arrest of the two suspects aged between 21 and 23. One of the phones was recovered. Investigation are continuing to find the other phones,” Lefakane said.

Colonel Tinus Swart, Bekkersdal Police station commander applauded the members for their swift reaction in apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring that some of the stolen property was recovered.
