A bird fair with the wonders of Africa

The African Birdfair will be taking place at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden on 8 and 9 September.

This year’s African Birdfair promises to be one that bird lovers, bird watchers, and bird photographers in particular definitely should not miss.

The 2018 African Birdfair will take place during the weekend of 8 and 9 September at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. A variety of exhibitors will be showcasing all things birding, such as binoculars and spotting scopes, bird books, birding apps, bird feeders, wildlife art and birding holiday destinations. Tour operators will also be available.

Throughout the weekend there will be lots of things happening, including guided bird walks, guided creepy crawly walks, photography workshops by well-known photographer Robbie Aspeling titled ‘Bird Photography and the Mirrorless Revolution’ (booking is essential), fascinating presentations by experts such as Faansie Peacock and Jonathan Leeming, and there will also be lots of fun activities for the kids.

Cost to enter the fair will simply be the standard gate fee of R50 (adults) and R15 (children) for the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. However, if you wish to take part in any of the guided walks, you will need to purchase a black eagle pin for only R25, giving you access to whatever is on offer, except for the photography workshops.

The photography workshops will cost R150 in addition to the Garden’s gate fee. For more information on the workshops or to make your booking, contact Nikki McCartney on 083 636 1060 or via email to nikki.mccartney@birdlife.org.za.

Gates open at 8am and close at 5pm on the Saturday and Sunday. For more information on the fair itself, visit Bird Life South Africa’s website at https://www.birdlife.org.za/events/bird-fair or contact Emma Askes at emma.askes@birdlife.org.za.
