Lovers conquer mountain hike

Couples from Randfontein and as far away as the Free State took part in a hike, exercise activity and self defence class in line with #Women'sMonth.

Devoted couples from all over, including Mohlakeng, recently took on the challenge of hiking through the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort once again.

According to Mandla Hamnca, the organiser, this initiative has become more vital than ever before.

The event was a way of trying to get couples to bond.

“The event was a way of trying to get couples to bond and cement their relationships, whether they are newlyweds or committed to tying the knot in future. Many couples are in unsteady relationships that can lead to various domestic challenges, including divorce, and bearing in mind that SA’s divorce rate is high and abuse of all kinds from alcohol to physical abuse is rife, organising the hike seemed like a really good idea,” Mandla said.

After the one-hour hike, fitness instructors Thabo Podumo and Hildah Biyela challenged the very same couples to some exercising activities.

He added they had a good response from couples on the West Rand, while some came from as far away as Mpumalanga and the Free State.

“We had people from all walks of life such as sport stars, teachers and nurses joining us. Councillor and Rand West City MMC for Corporate Affairs, Mami Moumakwe and her husband also took part in the hike.”

“It was indeed inspiring and fulfilling to be part of this occasion. We hope and wish the organisers will keep the event going in future,” councillor Moumakwe said.

After the one-hour hike, fitness instructors Thabo Podumo and Hildah Biyela challenged the very same couples to some exercising activities and taught them some self-defence.

Clement Matsitse, the motivational speaker on the day, added, “The hike symbolises that in love there are mountains to be conquered and since most of them finished the hike together, it means both can take the strain and cope with challenges life will throw at them as a couple”.
