‘Enough is enough with road fatalities’

A road safety campaign aimed at curbing road fatalities was launched in the Randfontein CBD ahead of Women's Day.

A number of departments came together at the Randfontein Taxi Rank on Tuesday morning for the launch of a road safety campaign aimed at curbing road fatalities.

The Randfontein Public Safety (Traffic) Department, the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), Road Traffic Management, the police, the Gauteng Traffic Department and Santaco – the governing structure of the taxi industry in the country – were all involved.

Connie Thobejane, Deputy Director of Road Safety Promotion said enough is enough with road fatalities.

Connie Thobejane, Deputy Director of Road Safety Promotion in the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, said the campaign sought to educate all road users about road safety, especially for the long weekend starting on Women’s Day, Thursday, 9 August.

Thobejane said it was time to say ‘Enough is enough’ in respect of road fatalities.

“We thought it would be fruitful for us to come here and educate people about their safety on the roads. We do not want people to die on our roads any more – we have experienced far too many fatalities and accidents on our roads,” Thobejane said.

Santaco members, stakeholders in the campaign, were in attendance.

She said further that all the partners who are on board with the campaign will help to extend the safety message to their stakeholders.

“We are saying road safety is everyone’s responsibility and the rules must be observed by all,” Thobejane added.

The road safety campaign moves to the Bosman Street station in Pretoria on Wednesday, 8 August.
