Westcol students embarked on a peaceful march on Monday 30 July to Westcol Corporate Park. They demanded answers from management about limitations imposed on students at the college.
However, the close to 500 marching students were barred from entering the premises to submit their memorandum to the Westcol management. The students subsequently camped outside while the Randfontein Police monitored the situation.
Speaking to the Herald, Tebogo Moloi, secretary of the Economic Freedom Fighters student body, said there are a number of issues that management had to address.
“Students were invited by SMS to come and register, but just before the process could start, we were told that the N4 students will only be taken in next year. We now want to know why they sent bulk SMSes and when students come to register, they are turned away.”

Moloi said management failed to give a satisfactory answer.
“The other issue is that we have part-time and full-time students, and we have a problem with management not willing to accommodate part-time students. We want to know why they are gate-keeping them.
“Regarding this issue, they were not given clear reasons. This practice would be unfair to those who have other obligations than being students. Some have jobs.
“The problem has occurred on numerous occasions, but now it has to come to an end. Every semester and trimester we have these issues whereby our demands are ignored. This is why we are here; we are here to raise our issues,” Moloi said.
He also alleged that the same problem occurs on other campuses.
“The principal must tell us why he left in the middle of everything; we are going to camp outside the premises until we are given answers,” Moloi added.
