Man arrested for lying about robbery

Police urge the community to refrain from making false and misleading statements following man's arrest for perjury.

A 35-year-old Bekkersdal man is to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on a charge of perjury.

This after he gave the Bekkersdal Police false information about how he had lost a number of items, claiming that he was robbed of a licensed firearm and two cellphones.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said, “Preliminary investigations revealed the so-called victim was sleeping at a tavern and a friend took the firearm and cellular phones for safekeeping. After a case was registered, the firearm and both phones were recovered.”

Colonel Tinus Swart, Bekkersdal Police station commander applauded the members for their swift reaction and recovering the items shortly after they were reported ‘stolen’. He urged the community to refrain from making false and misleading statements as they waste the state’s time and resources.
