The Greenhills Cemetery is once again in a shocking state.
There has allegedly been a sewage problem at the cemetery for weeks, but the municipality is doing nothing to fix it.
The Herald reported on the state of the Greenhills Cemetery on a number of occasions in the last few years and about a sewage problem on 2 July, but since then the problem has become worse, despite many residents and a councillor reporting the matter to the municipality.
Peter Dick, a DA councillor, said he is doing everything he can to solve this problem. He reported the problem on 12 July.

“I have reported the problem to the municipality but now my hands are tied. I can’t fix the drain myself,” he said.
The blocked drain has been a problem for several weeks and the sewage is starting build up around the cemetery fence. The sewage is running down the roads of the cemetery and residents have complained that it’s ruining the graves of their loved ones.
“The sewage is running into the storm drains which lead to a stream where some informal settlements get their water, so it can have an impact on their health as well,” said the councillor.
“The infrastructure of the sewage network wasn’t built to handle all the sewage from the new complexes. The network needs to be upgraded by the municipality,” Peter added.
He also said that the sewage problem needs to be fixed urgently because it’s bad for the town as well as the environment.
