Learners explore transport career opportunities

Over one thousand learners learned how they can get into various aspects of the transport sector at an expo held in Westonaria during the weekend.

A large number of Grade 10 to 12 learners from 15 schools in Randfontein attended an insightful career expo held at the Westonaria Sports Complex on Saturday, 21 July.

Its aim was to explore career opportunities in the transport sector through mathematics and science.

Tumelo Mafega explains to learners about engineering opportunities in SAA, during the expo.

Organisations such as South African Airways, Chuku, Maritime, Denel, the Department of Higher Education, South African Aviation Services, the National Youth Development Agency, the Transport Education Training Authority (Teta), the Department of Labour and Comair exhibited during the expo, which was facilitated by Teta.

Agnes Malesa, marketing and communication officer for Teta said the expo was an opportunity for the learners to see that jobs in the transport sector are not only university-driven.

“We want to ensure that skills in the transport industry are available and are known to the learners and the youth. In order for transport to move, you need the panel beaters, you need the spray painters. In all modes of transport that we have, you need artisan-related elements that are not really advocated well or well-known,” Agnes said.

Sebonya Mpetla training manager of SAA shares a joke with learners of Kgothalang Secondary School during the expo.

Sipho Mzimela, coordinator of the expo said, “We are not only targeting learners, we are also targeting the unemployed youth of this area.”

He said it was decided to hold the expo in Westonaria, as many people, especially the youth, have been deprived of opportunities. He added that learners were educated on the details of the transport industry and what the right channels are to get into each aspect.

“Exhibitors provided masses of information, discussing the in and outs of opportunities in mathematics and science. Presenters also informed the learners of the wide variety of careers in the transportation sector,” said Sipho.

Agnes also said that Teta will be awarding learners’ bursaries to study various fields within the transport sector.

Those interested can visit the Teta website at https://www.teta.org.za/ to download application forms before 31 July 2018.
