Another N12 hijacking: Police warn motorists

Victim hijacked on N12 and dropped off in Benoni – police issue warning.

Bekkersdal Police have issued a warning to motorists using the N12 following a spate of hijackings.

In the latest reported incident, the Toyota Hino Truck driven by a 55-year-old was hijacked on the N12 near Bekkersdal on Tuesday, 17 July.

“The victim alleged that he was driving along the N12 road when he noticed a Toyota Avanza with police-like lights flashing at him. He allegedly stopped, but was forced out of his truck at gunpoint and robbed of his personal belongings,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

She added the victim was later dropped off in Benoni.

“There are an unknown number of suspects and the case is being investigated.”

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander appealed to motorists to be vigilant along the N12 road.

“Never stop when stopped by unmarked vehicles; never stop when there is a vehicle flashing lights at you; never stop when a vehicle overtakes you and point as if something is wrong with your vehicle; never stop when an unmarked vehicle with blue lights flashes at you,” Colonel Swart said.
